Get to know: Henschke, Abbot’s Prayer 2000
Tasting Note
The Abbotts Prayer Merlot label links together the history, religion and pioneers of the mountainous Lenwood region. An area along Coldstore Road which leads to the vineyard was originally known as Abbotts Flat, named after the first settler. Vineyards were previously established in this area in the late 1800s.
The wine has sweet fragrant cedar, violets, mulberry, blackberry and cherry aromas. It has a very attractive, lifted palate, soft silky and rich with a fleshy texture and subtle smoky oak hints. It finishes long with layers of fine grained silky tannins.
Henschke recommend this mature wine should be decanted for no more than 30 minutes before serving and would taste great with venison.

Founded over 150 years ago by Johann Christian Henschke, this legendary estate has passed down through several generations in an unbroken line of dedicated and talented Henschke vignerons. Today, Stephen Henschke is masterfully shepherding his ancestorial property to continued heights through the range of stunning cuvées from amongst the best vineyards in Australia.
Matured in French Oak hogsheads for 21 months.
The 2000 vintage was small and early. Another drought winter, frost at the end of October, poor flower development in spring and the unseasonal cool temperatures in late October/early November led to low yields. This was compounded by high summer temperatures and a large amount of rain at the end of February – 100mm of rain over 24 hours due to a tropical cyclone up north – causing some splitting of fruit. Overall, the Abbot’s Prayer from this year is considered great.
